Salón Portátil is a portable classroom located in Barcelona, Spain. Its design is influenced by the culture and architecture in Barcelona, as well as pre-fabricated modular homes. The classroom can be used for a variety of purposes, as it includes a very flexible open space that can
be transformed to the desires of the occupants. Ideally, by day, the space is used as a classroom that can
accommodate 35 occupants. The desk and chair system rolls on a track that is installed within the ceiling. A
blackboard is installed on a separate track, and encourages interactive learning. When the space wishes to be
transformed, usually in the evening, the desks roll back and are stored all together at the back of the building.
This enables an open space that can host social events, or other community classes. The building is made from pre-fabricated steel and concrete parts that fit together to create a Gaudi inspired learning environment. Gaudi’s fascination with the natural world is evident in his design. In order to stay true to our inspiration, we created a wishbone-shaped plan. The steel arches act like a ribcage protecting the inner shell. Solar panels are aligned in a spine-like fashion, and also resemble fish scales. This portable classroom is a hub for creative learning, and hopefully inspires the students that occupy it.
